Baedeker's Art of Italy and Greece
The Grand Tour from vintage Baedeker guides
The New York Times described the Grand Tour: "Three hundred years ago, wealthy young Englishmen began taking ... a trip through France and Italy in search of art, culture and the roots of Western civilization."
For travelers on the Grand Tour, Baedeker provided an educational resource. The essays allow today's reader to share a part of the experience of the Grand Tour.
The authors are Anton Heinrich Springer (1825-1891) and Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz (1839-1911). Springer was professor of art history and is considered one of the originators of the study of art history. Kekulé von Stradonitz was a professor at Bonn and Berlin and antiquities director at the Berlin museum. He was called the founder of modern iconology.
